The importance of Religious Education in primary schools can be broken down into a few core categories, all of which Centre around helping children become more self-aware, kind and tolerant young people. Let’s have a look at some of these categories.

Spiritual growth

Arguably, the first thing that comes to mind when pondering the importance of Religious Education in primary schools, is the effect that it can have on children’s own spiritual development.

Religious Education poses a lot of existential questions surrounding the meaning of life, objective truth, the origins of the universe, the concept of life after death and the existence of God. For many children, this will be the first time they ever encounter these questions or the first time they are exposed to new viewpoints surrounding them. It is important for children to tackle these questions in a safe environment, where they can make informed decisions around their own belief system.

As part of their spiritual growth, children will also be exposed to how different religions value human life, relationships and nature. Exploring a variety of views on these important topics will help children form their own views on them.

Moral growth

Whether you personally follow any formal religion or not, the majority of them offer some valuable moral guidance. By studying different world religions, children will be exposed to a variety of views on morality and be forced to reckon with their own moral compass.

Religious Education gives children the opportunity to explore moral views on issues such as justice, truth and the concept of right and wrong. It also allows students to look at how people’s surroundings, backgrounds, families and social circles impact their moral beliefs.

Cultural growth

Last, but certainly not least, Religious Education is great for helping children become more culturally aware and thus tolerant. This is what a lot of people focus on when discussing the importance of Religious Education in primary schools. Gaining an understanding of different cultures and beliefs is integral to children’s growth and development.

Through their study of Religious Education, pupils will also encounter the ways in which religion and culture inform one another, which is both fascinating and helpful for understanding the way the world works.

The reason why this area of Religious Education is so impactful for primary school kids is that it helps to erase any ignorance early on in their lives. By learning about different cultures from a young age, children will not have a fear of the unknown and, therefore, will be much more accepting of those from different cultures, religions, backgrounds etc., throughout the course of their lives.
